Montclair Village, Calif. — The Montclair Sidewalk Fine Arts and Crafts Fall Fest returns to Oakland Saturday, September 24 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sponsored by the Montclair Village Association, this free event showcases works from more than 40 artists and crafters who will line the streets of the Montclair Business District displaying a wide array of handcrafted works including garments, photography, watercolor and oil paintings, jewelry, ceramics and more. All of the artists will be on hand to visit with patrons while some will be demonstrating their craft during the show.
Fabric
Lisa Candee makes breezy fabric bags for women on the go. Her purses are durable, washable and have plenty of pockets. Lisa’s bohemian designs are sewn from repurposed fabrics and every bag is designed and made by hand in her San Francisco studio. “All of the bags I create are handmade from new-life and repurposed, locally sourced fabrics,” says Lisa. “They are functional, durable and comfortable and have plenty of pockets so everything has a place to keep you organized for errands or throughout your busy day.”
Jewelry
Jeannie Haydon thinks of her jewelry as small sculpture. All of her creations are fabricated out of sterling silver, 14k gold and gold-fill. The metals are roller printed leaving textures from rice paper and fabrics. Pieces are then formed by hand sawing and delicate soldering. Lost wax casting is another process Jeannie uses to make limited editions. “I’ve been making jewelry for many years,” says Jeannie. “I find that my work is constantly changing because I have so many ideas and enjoy learning new techniques.”
Painting
Juan Archuleta’s mixed media painting comes from the experience of over 40 years in his career as a full time artist. His professional career in art began with portraiture in 1972 to support a wife and two children at the time. Since 1976, he has devoted his work to rendering landscapes, particularly forest scenes in style ranges from contemporary to traditional impressionism. Juan’s work has been advertised in Architectural Digest, and Southwest Art Magazine and he was commissioned by the Yosemite Fund Foundation in 1988.
Ceramics
Susan Troy creates functional and whimsical ceramics inspired by nature. “Color is an integral part of nature and I use a lot of it in my work,” she says. Much of her decorative work is painted freehand onto raw clay, fired, glazed, then fired again, creating a smooth, food safe and watertight surface. Susan primarily uses porcelain clay to achieve the bright colors she loves. “While there are definite motifs that reoccur in my work, I am always open to and in search of new forms of inspiration. I invite my customers to join me on this journey,” says Susan.
