Today, the American Technion Society (ATS) and the Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum of Tolerance announced the upcoming installation of “LABSCAPES: Views Through The Microscope,” which features stunning images of the hidden worlds found within the Technion’s research labs. The exhibit brings the brilliance of Israel’s foremost scientific institution to one of the world’s premier organizations dedicated to promoting tolerance and confronting prejudice and discrimination. The images, taken by Technion scientists, including the university’s Nobel and Israel Prize winners, detail the features of individual bacteria, the smoothness of a single droplet of mist, the ridges of a particle of clay, or even the twisted helix of DNA. On display in Los Angeles for one month only, they have previously been displayed in Israel, New York, and Silicon Valley. “The Technion is a powerful driver of innovation for Israel and the world. Many of the university’s biggest successes have been found in the tiniest of places,” said Jeff Richard, Executive Vice President ATS. “What better way to celebrate that track record than through a visually compelling mix of art and science that brings the university’s remarkable achievements to life?” The images were taken with the world’s most powerful microscopic imaging systems from a range of fields including physical sciences (chemistry and physics), life sciences, engineering and medicine. Created and curated by Anat Har-Gil, an artistically gifted member of the Technion’s Computing and Information Systems Department, the images are suggestive of a bigger picture—the dedicated work of scientists seeking a better future for us all. “LABSCAPES is an original, fascinating exhibition that changes our perception by reminding us that what we see is not necessarily what we think it is,” said Liebe Geft, Director, Museum of Tolerance. “Melding science and art, the vivid and brilliantly colorful exhibition gives us perspicuous insight into the elemental basis of all life, underscoring the fundamental universality of all living things.” Several events will be held in conjunction with the exhibit, including a Pride of the Technion students panel; a VIP Grand Opening; and an Investing in Israel panel featuring Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center; Yoram Cohen, Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at UCLA; and Dr. Qanta Ahmed, Associate Professor of Medicine at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook and author of In the Land of Invisible Women. Entrance to the exhibit is included with Museum admission. Please check the Museum’s website for hours and reservations.
